“In this case, my son was the victim of a crime at the high school. My personal phone was linked to his and was able to track it. I showed that to a detective-sergeant and said ‘what can we do with this?’ He said we can work cases like this. He took his team to track the signal and they weren’t able to find anybody”

- Michael Meehan, the embattled police chief for the city of Berkeley, California, attempts to rationalize why he dispatched 10 police officers to search for his son’s missing iPhone in January. Meehan claims he would have ordered the same for anyone else in the city and that his son did not receive special treatment.

The story behind this tape:

I was working in the newsroom of Sacramento’s FOX affiliate on November 5, 2008 when this piece of videotape came in. The tape shows two men being married at the Sacramento county clerk’s office, only to have their ceremony interrupted by the county clerk who said that, due to the overwhelming number of votes in support of Proposition 8, the county was suspending marriages for same sex couples.

After watching this video on a tape deck in our newsroom, I decided to publish it to our website unedited. Four years later, it’s still there. It’s one of those rare pieces of videotape that tells the story without narration or commentary.

I figured it was worth sharing again today.

Massive Military Mistake: The U.S. Defense Department admitted on Monday that an airstrike in Afghanistan three days earlier accidentally killed a mother and her five children. The airstrike mistakenly targeted a family home in the Sangin district, according to the New York Times. The strike was in retaliation for a Taliban attack, the paper said.
